Casa Haartman, located in central Naantali, is the studio home of artist Axel Haartman and his wife Hedvig. Designed by architect Erik Bryggman and completed in 1926, the building represents Italian-inspired classicism. Behind its understated facade, visitors discover the couple’s art, lifestyle and unique glimpse into their world.

Axel’s passion for decorative painting can be seen, for example, on the ceilings of the entrance hall and library. Many of the home crafts, meanwhile, are Hedvig’s work. The Haartmans considered their home Axel’s most important artwork and wanted it preserved in its original form.

The artist home features original furniture, objects and textiles, as well as works by Axel Haartman and other Finnish artists such as Victor Westerholm, Fanny Churberg and Wäinö Aaltonen.

Axel Haartman (1877–1969) was born in Turku and grew up at the Saustila estate in Sauvo and later in Turku. While living in Naantali, he often found inspiration in his home and the lush garden surrounding it. Hedvig (née Stolpe) was his favorite model. Axel worked not only as a painter but also as a critic, illustrator and cultural journalist, and played a central role in Finnish art as curator at the Turku Art Museum.

Casa Haartman is owned and operated by the Åbo Akademi Foundation. The museum also welcomes pre-booked groups. Admission is charged; please check current ticket prices on Casa Haartman’s website.
